Thangka
A thangka, spelled between thangka, tangka, thanka, and tanka, is a Tibetan Buddhist painting on cotton or applied silk, usually depicting a Buddhist deity, scene, or mandala.
Historically, thangkas were used as teaching aids. A lama or teacher would travel to give lectures on the life and teachings of Buddha. He carried with him painted scrolls to convey important spiritual events, aspects of different deities or Buddhist concepts.
